Neck injuries are common after an accident
Neck pain is discomfort in any of the structures in the neck. These include muscles and nerves as well as spinal vertebrae and the cushioning disks in between. The pain may also come from areas near the neck such as the shoulder, jaw, head, and upper arms.
When your neck is sore, you may have difficulty moving it, especially to one side. Many people describe this as having a stiff neck.
If neck injuries involve nerves (for example, significant muscle spasm pinching on a nerve or a disk herniation pressing on a nerve), you may feel numbness, tingling, pins and needles sensation. From these impingements you may also feel weakness in your arm, hand, or elsewhere.
A common cause of neck discomfort is muscle strain or tension. Usually, everyday activities are to blame. Such activities include bending over a desk for hours or poor posture while reading. Neck issues are also occur by placing your computer monitor too high or low, and sleeping in an uncomfortable position.
Chiropractic can help neck injuries
Another common cause of neck injuries are from automobile accidents, known as whiplash. Whiplash injuries should be evaluated immediately by a Chiropractic physician. Chiropractors can rule out any major soft tissue injuries such as disk herniations or disk bulges to the spine. Chiropractors are able to treat neck pain by adjusting the neck with their hands in a slight motion to help remove any nerve interference that may be the result of misaligned vertebrae in the cervical spine. Disk herniations and disk bulges are very common injuries to the neck and low back after an accident. Commonly disc herniations caused from MVA’s cause nerve impingement. MRI’s of the neck are a useful tool for doctors to rule out disc injuries and other soft tissue injuries. To find out more about neck pain click here.
